Why did you choose Anesthesiology?
I chose anesthesiology because I wanted to work in a field of medicine that balances critical thinking with hands-on life-saving procedures.  Every day, you can appreciate how your decisions instantaneously alter patient physiology and affect their outcome.  Anesthesiology tests your knowledge and performance under pressure, which makes it an exciting and challenging career choice!

Why did you choose the Univ. of Chicago for your residency training?
It was evident to me that the Anesthesia Department (and residency program) at the U of C has a long and rich history of training excellent peri-operative anesthesiologists. The department is highly respected at both the institutional level and beyond, and clearly places a high value on resident education. Residents get to train along side world-class faculty who are devoted to providing safe, quality patient care while allowing residents to acquire the skills they will need to practice independently upon graduation. The city of Chicago is also a fantastic place to live.

Where do you live in Chicago (area of he city) and if you like that area, why?
Streeterville. I'm convinced (with an obvious bias) that this neighborhood offers the best of all worlds.. Easy access to Lake Shore Drive for super easy commute to work, walking distance to lake front parks, trails, and beaches, walking distance to all the restaurants and night life in River North. Unfortunately parking and rent is on the expensive side.

Where do you live in Chicago (area of the city) and if you like that area, why?
I live in Printer's Row. It's a great area that is walking distance to many restaurants and shopping in the Loop. It's also a quick drive over to U of C.

Why did you choose Anesthesiology? To me, anesthesia is a mini intensive care unit with sole focus on one patient. The added benefit is direct interaction/adjustments of anything from central and arterial lines to ventilators. Constantly manipulating physiology in real-time. No need to place orders in a computer for someone else to follow. Additionally, I enjoy the variety of cases and patients with ability to sub-specialize in peds, cards, pain, etc.

Favorite weekend trips in the area?  As a Michigan native, I am partial to "Up North." The west coast of the state offers a number of beach towns on the way up to the Traverse City and Mackinaw City. Tons of inland lakes for fishing, sandy beaches on Lake Michigan, golf courses, and historic landmarks to visit. The fall color changes offers beauty in the drive itself.

Why did you choose the Univ. of Chicago for your residency training?
The University of Chicago was the most prestigious center with the nicest facilities that I interviewed. The new building was made with anesthesia in mind, and it is clear the program had brilliant professors who are well known in the community.
Why did you choose Anesthesiology?
My personality fit with that of other anesthesiologists. These are my people. I like procedures and the occasional adrenaline rush, and anesthesia provides both.

Why did you choose the Univ. of Chicago for your residency training?
U of C is an excellent program in an awesome city – it was an easy choice! All of the residents on interview day seemed really happy, and that was something that I wanted to find in my residency program.

Where do you live in Chicago (area of the city) and if you like that area, why?
I live in the Gold Coast, which has tons of shopping and restaurants. There’s a great farmer’s market on Saturdays too. It’s right by the lake as well, so it’s a quick walk to Oak Street beach.

Why did you choose the Univ. of Chicago for your residency training?
University of Chicago was by far and away my most enjoyable interview day and interview dinner. The camaraderie of the residents, support from faculty, fellowship options, and academic focus of the program were all top notch. I couples matched with my wife, who also fell in love with the Family Medicine program. We decided UofC was the perfect match.

Where do you live in Chicago (area of the city) and if you like that area, why?
Avondale. It’s a gentrifying working class neighborhood located just north of Logan Square. We have lots of space for the money, and its halfway between UofC and my wife’s residency program. Parking is easy and doesn’t require a permit. We have a 7 minute walk to the blueline, and can easily walk down Milwaukee to Logan Square restaurants and theater.
